It depends what you are looking for. If its for a nice tan and a slender body, go for swimming. For a nice butt and sexy long legs, I'd go with running.
As for training, well swimming works the core and pretty much all the muscles, so the work load is much higher than that of running. However running is a good for cross-training, to help in swimming.
