Difficult to say, but I'd say that a good book is one that stays with you. One of my favourites is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time ... by Mark Haddon.
Ignore the cover, in my opinion it is an insightful, poignant and gripping read.
Oh, and for a fun read, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe series
