Synergy is when two or more forces come together with a positive effect. It gets used alot in business when they talk about departments working together for a common goal, or two different companies merging.

It is overused to the point where it is considered a "buzz" word, a word that is used more because it is popular than because the speaker is giving meaning to it.

Definition Of Synergy

Synergy refers to the phenomenon in which two or more discrete influences or agents acting together create an effect greater than that predicted by knowing only the separate effects of the individual agents. It is originally a scientific term. Often (but not always, see Toxicologic synergy, below) the prediction is the sum of the effects each is able to create independently. The opposite of synergy is antagonism, the phenomenon where two agents in combination have an overall effect which is less than that predicted from their individual effects. Synergism stems from the 1657 theological doctrine that human will cooperates with the Divine Grace in regeneration. The term began to be used in the broader, non-theological, sense by 1925. Synergy can also mean:

A mutually advantageous conjunction where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
A dynamic state in which combined action is favored over the sum of individual component actions.
Behavior of whole systems unpredicted by the behavior of their parts taken separately. More accurately known as emergent behavior

so i think that in this context synergy probably means the similarities in the two dance forms. the dictionary definition of synergy (which you must have doubtlessly checked out) is "The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.". so for example if you've already studied jazz and you now wish to study salsa the synergies between the two techniques and perhaps several other forms is the perfect hip isolation techniques that are probably common to both. best of luck developing as a dancer!
