I can't believe no one has answered this...

The men are easy (except I had to narrow it down to three, which was hard):
John Adams - Though he was one of our worst presidents, he was an amazing American. It was his will and stubbornness that jolted us into the Revolutionary war. He also raised an amazing family of over-achievers. John Quincy Adams (his son) became our 6th president.
Benjamin Franklin - Sort of the anti-Adams, he secured our alliance with France, enabling us to become the free nation we are today. He also invented all that cool stuff with out even patenting it so people could use them freely.
Thomas Jefferson - Writer of the Declaration of Independence, is my personal hero because of his skeptical outlook and for his criticism of religion.

I'll have to admit, choosing woman was kind of tough:
Abigail Adams - wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams; single handedly organized groups of wives, daughters and sisters of the Revolutionary soldiers making every day life bearable during this war.
Marie Antoinette - Queen of France during the Revolutionary war.
Harriett Tubman - Mid-1800 led slaves to freedom along the Underground Railroad.
