Get McAfee's SiteAdvisor. It is compatible with IE and Firefox. Go here to download:
http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-20&qt=SiteAdvisor&tag=srch

It turns Red if you're on a dangerous sight, yellow if you're on a suspicious site and green if you're on a safe site.

There's another site scanner called LinkScanner Lite. You can get it here if you want:
http://www.download.com/LinkScanner-Lite/3000-2144_4-10610872.html

Both the software are free.

Trying to guess dangerous sites by gut feeling can be risky as not all malicious sites look the type. Sure, some sites can be billed malicious by looking at them. Not all. Better be safe than be sorry. Be brave, not foolhardy. Hey, that's what security software's for, right? So that you don't have to walk the tightrope.

Install a firewall and anti-virus to be safe and ask yourself "Do I think this website's unsafe?" If you think it's a risk, it probably is. Good luck.
