The castle is in North Yorkshire and is said to have been besieged for three years during the english civil war. Who were the besiegers, what forces did they have and who was in command ?

Colonel (he rose in the ranks) John Lambert besieged Skipton Castle. I haven't been able to find out details, but there is some help in Wikipedia which might be a good starting point.

You won't find a good source on line - - - the beseigers were Parlimentary Forces, Oliver Cromwell was in charge but not on the scene, he had more active battles to fight. My memory is not quite gifted enough to spew the name but the best contemporary book is 'The Lord Protector' by Antonia Fraser

Oliver Cromwell was in command in conjugation with Parliament during the civil war waged by the Royalists of Henry Clifford and John Mallory.
