Licensed exterminator answer:
Sounds like roaches. The important thing is that depending on the region you live in, it would determine the type. Here in the northeast, the German and the American Roach are the most common, which judging by your description, is what I think they are (German Roaches).
Roaches need to be around either a consistent food or water source to survive, while termites (wood destroying organisms) really have no reason to be in your bath or kitchen.
Since I can't see what you see, go to: www.entm.purdue.edu and search for the German cockroach, and compare it to your observations. You can even look for termites there, although the behavior of the insect you described most likely makes it a roach.
Just remember, roaches don't discriminate, and it's not your fault. I've literally been in million dollar penthouses that were infested, and these people had cleaning STAFFS around the clock. It just takes one package, bag from a store, vacation hotel stay, ride on a bus, fellow co-worker, or - bite your tongue -, family member who stays the night, to bring them into your home. I've even experienced kids bringing them home via bookbags placed near other children's bookbags.
The University of Purdue Entomology School is one of, if not the best, resources in the industry.
After you ID it, look in the local yellow pages for a pest control STORE. Ask them if they have the ROACH CONTROL BAIT GEL. If you use this correctly, it will eliminate the problem, and not expose you to harmful amounts of pesticide.

There are thousands of species of insect they could be. Why would you think they were roaches or termites? The odds are they're something else. See if you can find their picture in Google Images. The description of the picture will give a clue what they are.

If you email me a picture I can defenitely tell you what they are. If there are black spots on your ceiling and walls you have termites. They are prone to the bathroom because of the moisture. You will very rarely see a roach in a clean house.

Go to a search engine...and type in cockroach...and look at images and compare....
Termites wouldn't be that easy to find...I don't think they just roam around a living room..
