Usually the conductor is the leader of an orchestra, but since he doesn't play an instrument...the 1st violin is usually the leader. Everybody in an orchestra will tune their instruments according to the 1st violin.

I agree that the conductor leads the whole orchestra, but the first violinist is the primary instrumentalist and the orchestra tunes to the first violin.

If by leader you mean the conductor, he plays his stick!

If by leader you mean led instrument, that is the lead Violin.

One more thing that the conductor plays and the audience enjoy watching is his a*s.You don't believe me, check how they shake the bootie from behind. LOL.
