i do know that people with different skin tones are called coloured, but i never thought it was the 'english' spelling which referred to it, i'd have thought either spelling would work. what difference does it make?

No...racist people in the past and probably currently sometime refer to African Americans as colored folk...the spelling would be more a judge of the persons education or where they were from.
