Legally, no. Almost all state and local laws recognize pets as only the "property" of the humans who own them - not as companions or creatures with their own rights. If someone was to kill your pet, you would be entitled to the replacement cost of the property - not to monetary damages due to emotional distress or loss of companionship.

As unfortunate as this is, there are some pending lawsuits that are trying to change the legal status of animals and have them designated as companions.

Despite the way the laws are currently written, most states do require that pets and livestock receive proper care. For example, owners are required to provide food, water, shelter and appropriate veterinary care or they can be prosecuted for animal cruelty, which can be a felony and punishable by fine and imprisonment.

"Animal Rignts are Human Wrongs." "Someone must have grown up and spent all their life under the illusion that nature is essentially benign.'

All animal rights groups were formed out of the terrorist cells which operated in Europe in the 1960s and 1970s. Kim Stallwood fled Sheffield, England, following the arrest of his cohorts and co-founder of A.L.F., Ronnie Lee. Stallwood was welcomed into the "waiting arms" of Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheko. of P.E.T.A..
A Rat is a Pig is a Dog is a Boy - Newkirk
is re-conditioning people against the prohibition to kill people, by elevating animals to human status and lowering people to worthlessness. I don't believe human beings have a right to life - Newkirk.

depends on what you mean.

All creatures have the right to be loved, protected, be cared for, to live and grow. They depend on US to take care of them, feed them grom them, give them health care and to assure that they have fair treatment.....

Does it happen all of the time? sadly no. There are many animals that are abused, tortured and killed everyday.

Though there are punishments, sometimes the punishments
(usually decided by local-state laws) don't fit the severity of the crime.

A case in point is a man who recently let his dog stave to a mere 8 pounds before he took it to the shelter..... he tried to pass it off as a stray that he had found... he is being charged.

Another person left a dog in a trailer with plastic ties around it's paws to slowly starve to death. before it died it did try to chew through the ties but wasn't able to. Though I have my own answers, how would you punish the person that did this?

Another case that I remember from some years back, was that of a couple that ran a cat santuary in I think Idaho. They arranged for a weekend get away.... and had people that would be checking on the 150 cats they had in shelter, but wouldn't be staying there....Sometime during the night on Saturday, "boys" from the football team went to the house with basball bats and began beating the cats..... many of them were killed and some were injured so severly that they had to be put down.
When they were caught and asked why, the response was "we thought it would be cool".

What happened to these "fine young men"...... community service. and many in the community thought that punishment was too harsh.... the thought being," it was only cats"......

So, I don't know if this was what you were looking for.... but I hope it helps.

Remember humans are animals too. If we are "more intellegent" wouldn't that give us the resposiblity to make sure that all other animals receive the same rights that we have? I am talking about food and shelter and such like a safe environment.

Depends on how you look at it.
Wild animals deserve to live in peace without humans tourchering them.
Cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, arn't pets , altho you could have a pet cow or pig. if you live on a farm.
But mostley those are raised for our food..
People are meat eaters.
But pets yes, they have rights, meaning if your gong to own a pet, then that pet has the right to be fed everyday, have fresh water to drink, be taken out for a walk(dog),taken to the vet when it gets sick and treated with kindess and loving care...
And yes, you can get arrested for mistreating an animal.
Example....Dog fighting, which ILLEGAL in EVERY STATE.

They do not. They cannot vote and we usually decide where they live. Their food is substandard (remember the recalls?) and they're not allowed in many places.

Kind of a bummer, so take good care of your pets!
