The Mini is small, but it's not really intended to compete with Honda Civic, Toyota Yaris, and all the other budget minded cars. It's really a poor man's BMW now. The 3 Series cars have gotten out of range for many people now, and the Mini is a way to own a practical, somewhat affordable car that still has some of BMW's class and engineering. The VW New Beetle is going after a similar market. It's about having a retro look with modern reliability and convenience. If it bothers you that a Honda Civic Si is bigger, faster, and gets equal gas mileage for less money, then your'e not who they were looking for when they designed this car.

Well, they are very popular and are selling well at that price.

The original Mini that was introduced in the late 50s/early 60s and was produced for around 30 years was actually priced too LOW, to the point that /AustinBMC/British Leyland, the manufacturer, lost money on every Mini made. Since it was their most popular car model sold, the company bled money continually--- it could not generate funds on its own for model upgrades and improvements (which is why you saw little changes in the car over its lifespan), and probably was a major contributing factor to the demise of British Leyland and its successor, the Rover Group.

BMW is not going to make the same mistake again, that's for sure.

Several factors: Export shipping costs (coopers are made in UK), paid by US sales centers. Their popularity: coopers somehow sparked social popularity, albeit the car has been in existence for over 30 years that I'm aware of.

And it's a given that any vehicle commanding high insurance premiums has a even higher price tag that merits a degree of social elitism.

They cost so much because people are willing to pay that much. In this world corporation will charge for cup dirty if they can. Don't believe me? Don't they sell water even though is it free?

If people are willing to pay tons of $$ for stupid little car then that's what they'll charge.

What something is worth = what people are willing to pay.
