Call x the length of the shorter piece.
Since 84 cm is the total length, we can then call the length of the longer piece (84-x).

If x is 6 cm shorter than (84-x), then the equation looks like this:

x + 6 = 84-x
add x to both sides, sub 6 from both sides:
2x = 78
The shorter piece is 39 inches, the longer piece is 45 inches.
To check your work
39 + 45 = 84.

Hope that helps!

Very simple,see:

Let 'x' be the shorter piece length, and if u say that 'x' is shorter six times than long piece,it sounds that longer piece is 6 times long as shorter piece ( which is 'x' ), so:

x + 6x = 84
where,
x = shorter piece length
6x = longer piece length
since,we cut wire into two diffrent sizes,so
(shorter piece length ) + ( longer piece length ) = total length

so, 7x = 84
x = 84/7
x= 12 , this is the shorter piece length
since, longer piece length = 6x = 6 ( 12 ) = 72
so, that is answer.rite???

You would first divide 84 by 2 and get 42 cm for each piece. Then add 3 to one of the 42s and subtract 3 from the other so that they still add up to 84 but one length is 6 cms longer than the other piece. Giving you 39 cm and 45 cm.

Since we have two pieces both of which add up to 84 cm, we can write an equation to model the problem.

One piece is 6 cm longer than the other. Let's call the shorter piece x. That means the longer piece is x + 6. They must both add up to 84.

Therefore:

x + (x + 6) = 84

2x + 6 = 84
2x = 78
x = 39

Since x is the shorter piece, the shorter piece is 39 cm. ince the longer piece is 6 cm longer than the shorter piece, the longer piece is 45 cm.

Shorter piece = 39 cm
Longer piece = 45 cm

Algebra. L+S = 84. S = L-6. This solves easily to L = 45 and S = 39.

divide 84 in half. Add 3 to one half and take 3 from the other half. 42 plus 3 is 45, 42 minus 3 is 39. The length of each piece is 45 and 39.

Let the sides be x and x + 6

x + x + 6 = 84
2x + 6 = 84
2x = 78
x = 39
x + 6 = 45

The pieces are 39cm and 45 cm in length

1st wire (shorter piece), x;
2nd wire, y (longer piece).

x + y = 84 -- (A)

x = y - 6----- (B)

Substitute (B) into (A),
(y - 6) + y = 84
2y = 84 + 6 = 90
y = 90/2 = 45cm

x = 45 - 6 = 39cm

let two pieces be l and 84-l
now assume 84-l to be bigger
according o q
(84-l)-l=6
2l=78
l=39
