The Nazis believed in the "Herrenvolk" a master race of pure Germanic and Nordic origins, so the ideal was tall, blonde and blue-eyed.

The concept derives from the "hierarchy of races" where Africans were at the bottom of the heirarchy and, you guessed it, the Nordic races were at the top.

The belief was that southern Europeans had intermingled with these lower hierarchy races and had therefore become unpure. Only the Nordic races of north Europe had avoided this contamination and remained pure.

Aryans. The actual genealogy of these people is pretty mysterious- they lived in what is today northern India/southern Russia a couple of thousand years ago (don't let the geography fool you: races of people moved around a lot then and misunderstandings of ancestry lie at the heart of many conflicts today... for instance modern Greeks have nothing to do with ancient Greeks, in any ancestral sense). Hence, elements of other ancient races such as Nords (Vikings), Saxons and Angles were incorporated. Really the history of these groups is so mysterious and subject to speculation they can be used for any purpose.

But Nazism relied heavily on mysticism and myth-making. So 'Aryans' were said to represent many assorted 'Germanic' traits and to have undertaken many historical projects that Germans connected to, in a cultural sense.

Myth-making is a strong part of politics today- as always, Hitler was very 'modern' in his appeal and his politics.

Hitler grew up watching the Jews have more than him and friends, once in power he decided that only the most physical, intellectual and moral persons to raise the next generation (selective breeding). So handicapped children and the blind were killed first. He then went on to ethnic cleansing of the Jews, not stopping there, but on to any clergy, catholics, and a select group of people that might one day rise and conquer him. He was known for being paranoid. As you can see.

Well, really, anything he decided it was. He used the term Aryan to describe this race, which has no basis in anthropology or history; but to him the Aryans were a race of Nordic, blond, blue eyed, physically robust, and perfect people. Oh, yeah, they were also really smart. In other words, everything he was not, but no one seemed to notice at the time.

He felt the pure Aryan stock had been debased by mongrel (his term, or maybe Himmler's) blood, but that one could breed selectively and reestablish this lost race, by encouraging reproduction for the qualities one wanted. This is why, in some of the conquered territories, young children who were blond, blue eyed, healthy, etc. etc. were taken back to Germany and placed with SS couples.

No records of where they came from were discovered and as they were very young and their names were changed by the Germans most never were reunited with their birth parents.
