Now, pot-smoking, Rastafarians from the Caribbean pose a greater threat to America than radical Muslims do.

"U.S. officials and commentators have pondered whether the Caribbean, more commonly associated with fine rums and cricket on the beach, was now an overlooked
Afghanistan, teeming with Islamic radicals plotting attacks against U.S. interests."

It says they're wondering if Caribbean is teeming with Islamic radicals.

"One U.S. terrorism expert said the alleged JFK plotters were not a sign of al Qaeda establishing a Caribbean foothold but rather evidence of the growing threat of individuals the world over susceptible to al Qaeda's message"

The article is not saying terrorism is not a threat. But it is saying other non-al Qaeda terrorists are taking al Qaeda's message to heart.

The title is little bit misleading. May be its just poorly worded title.

The point is that other terrorists not related to al Qaeda may be joining its cause. And that we need to pay more attention to this movement. You think we should ignore this?

So be sure to read PAST the title.

I don't know how this article is 'downplaying' Islamic threat when in fact it is warning us about people listening to al Qaeda's message and going out and carrying out its message. "Destroy America"

Actually the article is kind of saying radical Islamism could strike you without al Qaeda actually being there. It's like al Qaeda remote controlling your neighbor. Sound scary to me.

Well the men involved in the terror plot were Muslim; the drug smugglers haven't tried to blow up any airports, have they?
Of course they constitute a danger, but they are not trying to bring down the whole country; they're parasites who couldn't make a living without a society to prey on.
So yeah, drug dealing is the major "law enforcement" problem, but radical Islamists are the major "national security" problem.
