The players are forced to wear certain numbers that correspond to their position so that the officials will know what type of penaltys to call when a player commits on. An example would be when a lineman goes down field before the ball is thrown downfield. The line man has a certain range if numbers that he can wear so if a ref sees one of those numbers downfiled then he knows what penalty to call.

Yep! That was a crazy and very good game between two very good teams. The Pats are arrogant and may be cheats but Brady and Moss are amazing. Moss uses his height to his advantage and even made a one armed catch. It was very suspenseful and came down to the wire. It's too bad the Superbowl usually isn't this good and both of these teams can't play in it. They are truly the 2 best teams in the league and it's a shame one of them had to lose. They each should have gotten a win or had a tie! Even not having all their starters, the Colts, especially the defense was awesome. New England got lucky and won the game. It was luck or they made a pact with the Devil-turnovers, sacks and penalties and they still WIN??? Someone will knock them off their pedestal sooner or later since the Colts unnerved them at times. If they were truly cheats, they would have known that the Colts' defense defensive schemes and would have been able to outsmart them! It was a great game and Indy should be proud. Tony Dungy is still the class of the NFL and the Pats are the unclass! Go Colts!

In the NFL, players wear uniform numbers based on the position they play. The current system was instituted into the league on April 5, 1973, as a means for fans and officials (referees, linesmen) to more easily identify players on the field by their position. Players who were already in the league at that date were grandfathered, and did not have to change their uniform numbers if they did not conform. Since that date, players are invariably assigned numbers within the following ranges, based on their primary position:
Quarterbacks, placekickers and punters: 1–19
Wide receivers: 10–19, 80–89
Running backs and defensive backs: 20–49
Offensive linemen: 50–79
Linebackers: 50–59 and 90–99
Defensive linemen: 50–79 and 90–99
Tight ends: 80–89, or 40–49 if all are taken
Prior to 2004, wide receivers were allowed to only wear numbers 80–89. The NFL changed the rule that year to allow wide receivers to wear numbers 10–19 to allow for the increased number of players at wide receiver and tight end coming into the league. Prior to that, players were only allowed to wear non-standard numbers if their team had run out of numbers within the prescribed number range.

NFL players DO choose their numbers, from what's available.
The great answer that listed the 1973 standard is correct, although running backs soon may get a chance to wear lower numbers as well (the "Reggie Bush rule") with the amount of RBs and DBs on teams.
Once a player has a number, it's his. College players getting drafted cannot "take away" an established player's jersey number.

The numbering sequence is for the benefit of the refs. This is why if a lineman comes in on offense to play TE he must report to the ref. That way the ref knows, by number, who the eligible receivers are. The numbering by position makes a lot of sense if you know the game.

It's to determine the position they play ever wonder how the ref knows what postion the player that comitted a penelty? it's all in the numbers! so each position is given a range of numbers that they can have.

It makes it easier to keep up with things. I personally hate the NCAA, and will take the NFL anyday of the week. At least games are decided on the field in pro football with none of the BCS crap.

Because it helps me locate the players on TV. Different positions have different range in numbers, so I can know who is who and what players are where. They do it all for me.
