I read earlier today that Putin had backed down from his original statement saying they would point missiles at Europe.
I think Putin is on a power trip. He was declaring yesterday that he is the ONLY true democrat in the world.

What I find ridiculous is that Russia is feeling threatened by a missile DEFENSE system. Russia is really over-reacting on this. But I don't think that this will be enough to spark another Cold War with Russia. The irony of the whole thing is that Putin is threatening to point nuclear missiles at Europe if America sets a shield to protect it from missiles, I just find that funny.

Russia is a brooding giant, but there will not be another cold war. There WILL be WWIII. Russia will be the instigator along with China, North Korea, and Iran. Iraq and Israel will be major players for the first time. A stable, US allied Iraq or an unstable mess might be the difference between victory and total annighlation. Sorry about sounding so melodramatic, but just watch.

Since the end of Yeltsen's presidency, Putin has pushed Russia to a more activist and threatening foreign policy with its neighbors, including Georgia, Ukraine, and of course, with the continuing war with Chechnya. Putin also has scaled back democratic reforms in Russia, and actually has had newpaper offices closed down for anti-Putin editorials, and 14 journalists have either disappeared or have been found dead, in addition to the recent case of a poisoned former-KGB agent who died in Britain. Putin deals with rogue states, sells nuclear ideas to them, and still is a menace in that sense. I believe if he runs for a third term and circumvents the Russian constitution that the heat will continue to rise in that part of the world, and in particular with relations between the US. I would hope that cooler heads will prevail, but with Bush and Putin anything is possible. Also, Putin announced the creation of a new Russian series of missiles that he claims would make any defense shields obsolete. I believe another cold war or arms race is counter productive not only for both sides, but for the world, as a whole.

It never ended. It wore a facade of freedom and democracy for a while... for a while, the citizens of Russia enjoyed the "feeling" of being somewhat free... but Putin has proved a thousand times over that the Cold War never really ended.
Putin's too much of a power hungry schmuck to really care about the welfare of human beings.

the very influencial defense contractors would love to have another arms race.
pointing missles is just symbolic, it takes about 5 mintues to load weather and target data into a missle.
what you think america's response would be if russia put the same thing in latin america? can you say cuban missle crisis?
america has one of the most hypocritical foreign policies in the world.

no person "started the chilly conflict." It replaced into purely a certainty of existence on the tip of WWII. With the Soviets claiming administration over exceedingly much all of jap Europe, and the Western Allies already seeing the super atrocities and evils of the Soviets, a sort of conflict between the two factors replaced into inevitable. the two factors had financial and philosophical structures that have been inherently adverse. the authentic commence of the chilly conflict is generally traced to Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech, given in 1948. So, in case you needed somebody which you would be able to say "started" the conflict, it may be Churchill, a Brit.

Russia can't even secure the nukes they got.
That country is a mess right now, they couldn't raise the money for another Cold War. If Putin tried he would end up bankrupting and imploding his own country.
