I live in chicago, and I need to know about wish side of the fence should be facing my property? back or front side? I was told by a contractor that I could put the good side of the fence toward my property line, or either sides.

hey
2 things to think about...

1. flat side towards your house...
looks nicer, gives the feel of ownership of the fence when the slats are on the inside...thus future repairs are kinda looked at as belonging to the guy who has the nice side of the fence..
no need to trim around the posts, there on the other side.
2. flat side out...
put in a third horizontal 2x4 in the middle, this keeps the boards from warping in the future...also...
with a middle board you can use it to set plants on or yard art...wagon wheel n small ceramic animals...thus you can use the rail to your benefit...
you also have to trim around the posts when doing your lawn.

Everywhere I've ever lived, the flat side faces the neighbor. Local building code will tell you for sure. I just fenced my yard and put the flat side to my neighbor. Another neighbor put the other side of some fence to the same neighbor and is having problems and complaints. Check the building codes, Know where the property lines are and discuss the project with the neighbors first. Try and resolve any possible disputes before the fence goes up. Good fences make good neighbors, Bad fences make problems.

Number one: In three States I lived in, the back side faces you, not the neighbor. The flat side faces the neighbor. I would, after getting these other responses, call your zoning board or the building codes division and find out the correct way or, you might find yourself taking your fence down.

Make sure you know where your property lines are and how far your suppose to be from them, be able to prove it. The same info goes here.

Check with your neighbors, find out all you can, you wouldn't believe what they can do if that simple fence is considered a nuisance, they can sue you and make you take it down, everything from blocking their sunlight to stopping their view, call your zoning board first.

Use this product and your fence will last a few decades. Posts rot and ground contact and the rest of your fence that doesn't touch the ground lasts decades. I am in no way part of this company just a good product! http://www.postcollar.com/
