400 / 500 gb are desktop hard drives > 3.5"
largest laptop hard drive i've come across is 200 gb > 2.5"

dealing with the gb part first, i doubt if bios recognizes beyond 120 gb ... please check with manual / dell support

second, connection type: it is ide
to best of my knowledge, no m140 with sata

rpm should not be an issue

the above are true, assuming you are wanting to change your internal hard drive !

if it an external hard drive you mean,
you connect thro usb 2.0 / firewire
in which case 500 gb should be no issue at all

# a clarification would be appreciated & i can give you exact details ... internal or external hard drive ?

That is a Laptop, right?
If it is, they don't make internal hard drives that big for laptops. I think 200 gigs is the biggest and they are 2.5" at 5400rpm. You can get an external hard drive that big and that is universal, just make sure it is USB 2.0 or Firewire (firewire is faster).

Try http://www.pricewatch.com/ or http://www.newegg.com/Store/Computer.aspx?name=Computer-Hardware

Your going to want at the minimum a 7200 rpm with at least an 8mb buffer and look for something called SATA. All hard drives are universal so dont worry about whether or not it says its compatible with your Dell.
