I'm not getting power to my turn signals and my a/c is not blowing cold air. I have reason to believe my belt is slipping. When I put it in I have the tension at about 1/4 inch (I didn't measure, I guessed). How do I test for slippage???

1/4 inch is normal tension. Any tighter and you will destory the bearing in the alternator. It might be a bad alternator or a bad battery. A quick tension test is to try to turn the alternator fin with your thumb. If you can turn it, it is probably to loose.

If you have a volt meter (you can get them for as little as $10 at sears) touch the leads to the battery and see what the reading is when the car is running. It should read 13.5-14.5 volts if the alternator is working. To test the battery turn the car off and turn on the headlights for 30 seconds. Afterwards check the battery voltage. It should be 12.2-12.6 volts.

Your A/C pump and alternator are run by two separate belts, are are therefore not related. The turn signal issue could be a blown fuse, a defective turn switch in the steering column, or any of a number of different electrical issues.

My guess is that your A/C evaporator coil has sprung a leak, and you are out of freon. A cheap repair ? Not in the least. Expect a bill for about $800 to remove and replace the evap coil. Chrysler had a serious problem with these A/C evap coils for a few years, even going to the point of extending the warranty for several years. Those cars are now all past that warranty period.

Turn signals are run off the battery. Check to see if your alternator belt is also your AC belt.

The turn signals are a mystery, they take very little electricity. If your alternator was not charging your battery enough the car would not run.

In any case, if it slips a lot it will make a loud noise. Have some one stand outside and lift the hood up. Make sure they do not have their head under the hood.

Rev the engine from idle to 5000 RPM quickly several times over. If the belt slips it will be heard.

If it does not, it will be silent and you have some other kind of weird problem.

dah dude

As stated above, the tension is probably OK. A/C not blowing cold air is an A/C problem. Turn signals NOT working is probably a flasher (under driver side dash) or a bad bulb.

Usually to test your belt for slippage. u rev ur engine about 4000 rpm. have someone stand in front of the car and listen for any squeeling. if squeeling is heard, ur belt is loose

grab the alternator fan, if you can turn it with the belt on then its slipping.........not likely........your a/c is out of freon and i would be willing to bet your turn signal switch is bad........
