Could you do that? How would they know?

I mean I could call, say I am Jane Doe...give them my opinion about the bill. Then of course they always ask for your address so the "elected official" can send you a response, so now the person who's address that you used will get this response and know what the senator is really up to.

No its not illegal. My ex used to work for a Senator. The people who take these calls are usually interns. High school and College students. The calls are documented and tallied up and then reports are written at the end of the day telling what issues the people are concerned about. The reports are then discussed with the Senator. Im not sure if they mail you a reponse. Prob. not. Theres only about 10 people working in a office and they get a lot of calls. Dont be afraid to give your real name, they deal with some really crazy callers and you dont sound like your even close to some of the people they have to deal with.

It isn't illegal, but why would a person WANT to? Not that many people bother to contact their representatives, so trying to pass yourself off as someone else won't exactly be the deciding factor in influencing a legislator. The representatives whom I contact always ask for a name, address, telephone number and email address. I have gotten responses from most of the people who were the recipients of my emails and telephone calls. Hope that this helps.

When you call a Senator or Congress person, they have a record of your phone number, therefore, it would not be hard to find out who you really are.

Not unless you do something really bad under the alias -- like threaten to blow his butt to kingdom come if he doesn't agree with your opinion on the bill.

freedom of speech, my friend. say whatever you'd like. as long as you aren't impersonating an actual person, you're fine. you can even use your real name and no harm would come to you, though I can see why you wouldn't want to :]
