It's actually a contraction of God be with ye, a typical blessing one would bestow on an acquaintance upon parting. That same sort of thought process can be heard in the Spanish phrase Vaya con dios - or Go with God.

i.m a inuyasha fan also. in the olden days it was a word you say only to someone that is dieing it meant good by for ever or untill we see each other in the spirit word. now a days it just means till we see each other again some other day.

Last time I checked it was a corruption of the more formal expression, "God be with Ye".
