My husband and I are preparing to sell our house and herein lies the problem. We have 4 dogs and of course over the 5 years we have lived here there have been accidents. It happens, it is just part of having animals...anyway, I need some tips on what products work good in removing pet odors from homes. I have removed all the carpet in our home and all we have now are hard surfaces for flooring. Even with the removal of carpeting there is still a lingering in the air of pet odors like the wet dog smell and other not so great smells associated with animals. I don't have a lot of money to spend on this so I was hoping for some inexpensive or home made remedies that might be out there...

Thanks so much for your help...

My mom bought a home smelling very strong of cat/dog urine. It was so bad the carpet literally dripped urine when it was being removed. Even after removing the carpet the smell remained and the new carpet installer recommended a product that all home improvement stores sell; it's a clear coating that you roll over the floors, dries fast and seals the smell. Worked great...you would never know there were any pets in that house. I don't know the name, but i'm sure Lowe's could help you out with it; after all it was their idea. Best of Luck!

I know you won't like my answer, but this is exactly what I tell all of my customers who have the same problem...

If you want to sell your home rapidly and for top dollar, you need to have your dogs out of the home while you're showing it. As for removing the pet odors, you'll need to wash the floors really well (other valid suggestions have been made by others for this so I'll pass on that), you'll need to wash any curtains, bedspreads, mini blinds or other types of blinds and anything that will have possibly absorbed the smell in the air. I know this is a lot of work but it needs to be done. And that's why your dogs need to be elsewhere (family members, good dog-lover friends, nieces & nephews, etc.) If you keep the dogs in the house while selling, the smell will persist no matter what. And trust me, pets turn off LOTS of buyers. Especially in large numbers (4 is a large number in most opinions).

Make certain that once the odors have been removed from the home that you'll need to open ALL of your windows at least 15 minutes 2x per day. Fresh air is without a doubt, your best defense against odors.

Good luck selling your home. You may want to consult with a professional home stager in your area or on the web to get a customized step by step report to aid you in preparing your home for sale. Many of my customers request just this and then follow the report to stage their home then sell high & fast! A properly staged home, using design & buyer psychology will be on the market an average of only 14 days and sell on average at 98% of the asking price! The best thing about staging your home for sale is that it costs less than a first reduction in asking price (usually the 1st reduction is 5 thousand...), and staging has a return on the investment of approximately 169%!

Good luck selling your home!

Nature's Miracle is an excellent enzyme cleaner for spot stains. I likewise have three dogs and usually a foster dog, so I know what you mean. Also, I find that the ionizers work pretty well. A good airing out is always helpful if you can just open the windows for the whole day before it is shown.

Any fabrics you have (bedding curtains) will have to washed
Furniture sprinkle with baking soda and let sit overnight, vacuum the baking soda with deoderize/pick up loose dirt

Hardwood floors I would mop lightly with a slightly damp mop of vinegar/water

If you have time I would try and freshly paint all the rooms with a neutral paint color...

On show day bake some cookies and leave them out... The smell might hide some lingering odors...
