Sorry, they are not an alien housing development. If they are green, they are irrigation circles. A rotating irrigation pipe can handle a circle 1/2 mile in diameter, so you can pack 4 to a square mile.

More information is needed, like color, relative size, surrounding features, etc. But my first guess would be a green circle where crop irrigation is being used. Many irrigation systems use a huge sprinkler up to a quarter mile long that pivots from a central point to cover the entire field, leaving a large round area (up to 1/2 mle diameter) of green in the mostly brown surroundings.

You were seeing farming, by way of center-pivot Irrigation sprinklers. They probably appeared green (the crop), while everything else was brown (baren land).

you are not really giving enough information but i am guessing what you saw were sprinkler systems. they rotate them in a circle, and those areas are green
