What does anyone feel about tiping the carryout person? Dont they have to package all the food and do allot more work then the actual server? Why is it that people seem not to tip these people?

Just what I thought! They do everything but cook it. The package it and make sure all the dressings are package differently. They actual work allot harder then the server does, like standing in the corner chating with the other server. I did curbside for a year and ran up and down the food line package food under the hot heat lamps. Checking, making sure everything was there and then anwering the phone at the same time. I would run out to and deliver and get a 1.00 or 2.00 ..Anyways, thanks I just needed to know what you all thought the carryout person did....

Yes you should tip the take-out person. Besides taking care of their dine-in tables (which can be a chore when the restaurant is busy); I have to take time out to answer the phone, take the order, put it in the computer, bag and cup the free chips and salsa you get with every meal, double check the boxes, label the boxes, and bag up all the boxes. All this has to be done in a pre-determined time and I take care of the money too. The bigger the order, the harder it is. Sometimes I have an easier time waiting a table than putting together a to go order. Plus if I dont give my dine-in customers the attention they deserve I loose my tip there too. So please be curtious people! We do work hard for our tips!

Here in Nebraska, at most restaurants, if you receive a tip, you pocket it immediately, there is no tip pooling, no tip outs, no percentage this, percentage that. If you receive a tip, you keep it.

The answer to your question, Is the person who prepared the food and packaged it going to get the money? Probably not. So don't bother, unless you can tip that person directly.

I tip, but not at the 15-20% I normally would had I dined in.

I do this because it guarantees me they will get my order out quicker and shows I appreciate their service.

I work in a restaurant and no one expects a tip for carryouts. If you had a particularly difficult order that's really big or really modified, I would suggest leaving maybe a dollar or two. But otherwise unless someone is helping you to your car or something, there's no need to leave a tip.

People don't have to tip the person who assembles and bags the food and rings you up. But if they take it out to your car, I think $2 is good for the convenience.

Carry out generally means no tip, but as with any situation, if someone goes above and beyond in their service to you, you should consider giving a tip. For example, if they are exceedingly friendly, give you something unexpected, or make you feel like you are the best thing that happened to them that day, then sure. Why not encourage that behavior by giving a small token of appreciation?

If I do tip them, it's not much. All they do is bring it to you. If you were to go inside, the waiter or waitress would be doing a lot more than just bringing your food. They make sure your drinks are filled, check on you every now and and then, clean up after you, etc etc. I'm pretty sure they don't package the food, maybe they just put the lid on it. Wouldn't the cook package it? I mean, where else are they gonna put the food when it's done?
