They have a pain reflex, but they do not have the mental capacity to suffer. They do not have a brain, but only a pair of nerve ganglia; there is nothing even resembling consciousness.

Yes they do. All animals having a central neural system do perceive stimuli and the unpleasant ones are transducted as pain.
If you want to make an experiment to test this, get a live clam, open it and add lemon juice to its soft tissues, then watch for a response.

all living things feel pain.
just because they can't communicate it to us..doesn't mean tha they don't feel it.
