My friends and I just bought a lobster from walmart to keep as a pet. The people at the store didnt know anything about it since everyone buys t hem to eat. Does anyone know how we can keep it alive? what kind of water we can use? what to feed it? Will it stay alive tonight? we put it in the bathtub with some salt (no iodine) and we fed it chunky ragu spaghetti sauce... thats the best we could do

I take it this was a live lobster from the seafood department? Lobsters are omnivores, meaning they'll eat plant or animal material, so you shouldn't have a problem feeding it (although I wouldn't suggest spaghetti sauce). Try pelleted fish food if he makes it through the night. It would also be a good idea to get it a tank - the tub might have soap residue that won't be good for him.

If this is a true marine lobster, they'll need saltwater to stay alive, but this means sea salt, not table salt. The concentration would be over a 1/2 cup per gallon of water, and you'd need a hydrometer to get the concentration correct (1.024-1.026 specific gravity). The temperature of the water would depend on where the lobster is from (in the ocean). Did you ask at Walmart about the temperature or amount of salt they were keeping the lobsters at?

He'll also need to have something to create oxygen in the water.

feed him small fish and maybe i reapet maybe worms
and also give a nice hide spot where it colder
so might as well just keep the water colder and set out a large rock so if he decides to go moving around he can get on the rock
and you know at walmart fish r cheap so yeah get the small gold fish or minnows but if ita craw fresh its freshwater you want and if your positive its a lobster salt water and it most lilely will only makit it another day or two hope my answer helps

They need cold water with a specific amount of a specific type of salt. Also, letting them go is a bad idea. They will most likely not be native to the area in which you release them, meaning one of two things will happen: 1) The habitat will be unsuitable for them and they'll die 2) They will live and breed and a feral population will threaten the native species. Additionally, they are likely to introduce a disease foreign to the area and kill the native creatures. Honestly, it would be best if you gave these lobsters to someone who will eat them.

I think it needs a salt water tank like other crabs/saltwater fish. It needs an air filter in the water. I'm sure it likes cold water but not icy.
