Suppose his speed is v km/h and it took him time t to fly each of the two distances.
Flying with the wind, his total speed was v+20 so we have t(v+20) = 600; flying against the wind his net speed was v-20 so we have t(v-20) = 500.

tv + 20t = 600
tv - 20t = 500
Combining these we get 40t = 100 and so t = 2.5 hours; and tv = 550, so v = 550/2.5 = 220.
So the speed of the plane was 220 km/h.
