Well America certainly doesn't care what the rest of the world is doing. Going back to the formation of the US government, America crafted a capitalistic democratic republic when the rest of the world was monarchies. The rest of the world uses the metric system for measurements. So, saying the rest of the world uses "football" for something else isn't going to hold any sway with many Americans.

American football started out as a form of rugby which involved a lot of kicking (instead of the forward pass, they had the forward kick). In time, the rules changed and the game evolved, but the name stayed (Australia's keystone game is pretty much rugby, and they call it football there, too). Soccer didn't come over until much later, and by that time the name was taken in American minds.

Let the rest of the world call their pansy game of soccer whatever the hell they want to. In the US everyone knows what real football is all about.

I don't know but, I just saved a bunch of time on my tv by switching to football . OH, i just remember why they call them that. It had something to do with a farmer , a shoe string , and some baby oil. I'm glad i don't remember much more of that story. GO JESUS and the GATORS

We like to be different I guess. Same reason we write the date different, don't use metric, and don't quite speak English correctly. Everything is Americanized.
