I am a care giver to a 90 yr old man. And he is also a neighbor I have known for almost 50 yrs. I take him to the bank a couple of times a month. Today we went and he was not feeling well and asked me to cash his check for him. I also have an account with this bank. Fortunately it was his check made out for cash so he would have some spending money. They did cash the check.(because it was his and made out to cash), BUT, in the future when we go and he has a check made out to him and he doesn't feel well how can I cash this check without being on the account? I took his ID in with me, but until they saw it was a "cash" check they were not going to cash it. Are the tellers or a manager allowed to go out in the parking lot with me and verify that he is there? Or what should I do? Thank you

Either have him sign the check over to you, or the manager can go into the parking lot with you. After a while of doing this the bank should recognize you and not be as strict with you.

I used to do this with one of our customers (go to the parking lot to do bank business with him).

Ive worked and managed at banks, in a different level but I had to go to these training classes. A teller should never give you money written out to cash, that isnt your account. You said you have an account with the bank. Have him write you a check and just give him the cash or go through the drive up window with him in the car. I assume they have those where you live.

I would talk to someone at the bank and see what they suggest. Otherwise, if you bank there too, why not have him write the check out to you, so you can just cash it yourself?

I don't know whether you can count on someone being able to come out and verify he is there. I used to work at a bank as a teller, and we were pretty short staffed. I don't know if I would have been able to go out to the parking spot.

If the check is made payable to you, you can cash it. If it's not, they will not cash it. In order to transact on the account, you must be an authorized signer or have legal documentation from a court stating otherwise. Other than that, your 90 year old friend needs to be there.

it depends on your bank. different bank has different policies and procedures. The one I am working at does not take third party check (meaning he endorsed the check and make it payable to you). unless both of you are inside the bank with proper ID. Since both of you have accts in that bank. it is the best to have him write a check payable to your name. so you can cash it that way.
If he has a check payable to himself and want the cash, deposit that check to his acct and then have him write a check payable to you in the same amount.
The manager can not go to the parking lot with you to verify him due to serurity issues.
Also, if he is ok to add you on his acct as a POA. then you have the power to act as a signer on the account with limited access.
The best answer to this question is to go to your bank and speak to the Operation Manager.

Have him endorse the check over to you. He just writes it on the top of the back of the check: Pay to the order of____. And then signs it below that. Obviously you are a trusted person so he shouldn't have a problem with that.
