well turtles are very dirty animals in general. especially if you turtle is an aquatic one then those get very stinky. i have a turtle too so the smell depends on the food you give to your pet and then it can also depend on the size of the cage or wherever you have it. but the main point is that i have to clean my turtle in the summer twice a day!!!!!!!!!!!!
and in the winter about 2 times a week. so like you HAVE to clean its cage at least twice a month.
but to make the long story short turtles are very dirty and they also have many diseases not for them but for people so wacth out and be sure that your turlte is clean

they really make the tank stink in a few days. Its because of the algae and the extra food that they eat. They are messy eaters and don't eat the whole thing that you give them, especially pellets. I had a solution to this (I have 3 turtles in one tank), i bought an overhead filter for them. it cleans the water and it stays clean for around 3 weeks before any water change is needed plus you can appreciate them more since the water is almost always clean.

Turtles have different organisms in their digestive tracts. What smells bad to us is normal to them, and vice versa. They need a very intensive set up, usually much more money than people realize, including filters and lights and a LARGE tank with the correct substrate. Different turtles have different diets, and feeding them only pellets is bad for them. Imagine how you would smell and feel after eating only highly processed food for several weeks (think of that McDonald's documentary...)

living in a confined space and depending on someone other than Mother Nature is the main reason so; clean the tank more often, get a larger tank, vary the diet, and try nitrate removers for the smell. you can also use aged water that has sat for a while, treated water seems to cause algae blooms and salmonella growth faster then aged water does.

i have 3 turtles in a tank, they are healthy and seem pretty happy. i smell nothing stink maybe because i change the water daily. i feed them an hour before i change the water. it works for me, maybe for you too.

Well it's because they poop bigger chunks, they live in the same water (it's not like they're in a pond or anything), it's a small tank, and they're food tends to smell more than fish food. Plus i think they do a lot more business in there than fish.

because the owner won't give the turtle what they truely need to live a happy life. you need to invest in a large tank, filters and good food and lighting.

Well, put yourself in a giant toilet and don't flush it for a week and then tell me how dirty and stinky it is.
