If you are leaking water (coolant) then you have a leak somewhere that needs to be identified and repaired.

You need to look at it from the front where the radiator is to the firewall where the heater core would leak. Radiator or a leaky hose is an easy fix. Water pump can be a so-so to insane. Heater core is a really tough fix. Lots of labor to get that thing out.

What will happen if you don't fix this leak is the cylinder head(s) will slightly warp since there is no coolant running through the heads and then the head gasket will start to leak.

Best case scenario is a leaky hose, Then a leaky radiator. Then the water pump. Then the heater core.

Good Luck!

Worst case scenario is a leaking head gasket and this would entail pulling the heads off of the motor and sending them off to a machine shop to be gausge and resurfaced and then re-installing the heads. Big job and lots of labor.

usually when the bearings in the water pump go out they leak out a weep hole to let you know theey are failing before they totally self destruct. So you car will start leaking slow at first then as the bearings get worse it will leak more. or you could have a leak somewhere, try and find where it's Leaking, if it runs hot the water will boil out the overflow. If everything is good meaning T-stat, water pump, no leakes and it over heats only while sitting in traffic or slow speeds check to see if the electric fans behinde the radiator kick on as the temp warms up. If they dont then the t-stat control, or electrical connection for the fans may be the problem, whatever you do never continue to drive your car when it gets up over 250 degrees or in the red if your gague doesnt show temp in degrees. Thats the quickest way to ruin your engine.

Is it actually overheating or is the gage just reading high?
Some coolant temp sensors are high in the cooling system and a small drop in coolant level can cause a high reading.
If the car still runs hot with coolant full you've got a prob.
My car did this with a leak even full of coolant until I fixed it.
caused by air in the system
could be water pump

I would think that with the age of the car the electric fans may be done and not working. There is not much else it could be other then the water pump and i really don't think thats is it. The fans go more then the pumps. See if they are running

Sounds to me the leak is the prob....get a new or second hand radiator and put it in.guarentee this will fix it.when you come to toping the radiator make sure you get rd of the air outa the system

are your cooling fans coming on ? and how big of a water leak ? if its leaking out water it will over heat .....fix leak and make sure cooling fans are comming on if its still doing it you might have a cracked head or blown head gasket
