Too dangerous to try alone. There is one place I have heard of in Florida that tries to do this. They shoot model rockets into thunderclouds and have a trailing copper wire attached to the end of the rocket. Occasionally they get lightning to pass down the wire and strike a target. They cannot use the energy at this time. Instead they use the lightning to test the strength of the different materials and structures to withstand the energy they may face in a storm.

take an 8ft. steel rod,pooooooooound it in the ground about 1ft.. when you see the lightning go out and hold the rod. make sure the ground is wet. hold a light bulb in your mouth,when it lites up you'll know you tapped in to the bolt.
