Noble Gases - formerly known as Inert Gases. They were once called inert because they did not react with other elements. We now can form compounds from the heavier Noble Gases, so the term inert does not apply to them all.

It is also known as Group 8 or Group 0 gases.
Noble gases are inert as they have no valence electrons, that is no valency. Valency is determined by the electrons on the outer shell

The furthest right, I assume, contains the noble gases. They are called the noble gases because they are very hard to bond to anything else, and prefer to remain on their own. Kind of like not marrying a commoner back in the day.

The rightmost column is the noble, or inert, gases. They generally don't react easily with anything, hence the name.

It used to be called inert gas until it was demonstrated (1964??) that compounds could be formed with Xe. Noble gas is the only term accepted, don't use inert gas.
