The intel core 2 duo is the best CPU now in the market. AMD processors are now being discounted because of a lack of demand.

Well first a couple of things on what protozoider said. I don't really know what benchmarks he is using, but this issue has really been decided by numerous published benchmarks, Intel Core 2 Duos beat the Athlon 64 X2s in desktops. Secondly, I am not really sure what all that stuff about features was. Yes it is true you need to look at the rest of the components in the computer, but when it comes down to it, when comparing two different processors, unless they by chance happen to perform exactly the same, one will outperform the other, and therefore is better.
In this case, the Core 2 Duo is that chip as these benchmarks show:http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_mobile.html
EDIT: The guy below me showed you desktop related articles, not laptop, so disregard, they are two seperate things.

I swear by AMD on desktops but I don't have a definite answer as to what is better in laptops. I'm a computer professional and I've done a lot of testing and benchmarking with intel and amd processors on desktop. AMD still comes out on top. However, the feature set is very different between every brand, model, and version on laptops. You could have three HP laptops with the same processor but all different hardware. Then you could have 3 more HP laptops with intel processors and different hardware.
It's really what works best in conjunction with each other. The problem is that you can't upgrade or change your laptop. You just have to test out stuff at the store and see what fits your needs I think. Some are better at multi-tasking, some at games, some at multimedia. You really can't buy a laptop just for the processor. The problem is intel and AMD both use different motherboards, chipsets, and graphics processors. These are so vastly different they are very hard to realisticly compare.
The core processor only computes 1s, 0s, and does math. Everything else goes through various components. On a desktop, this makes a difference because parts are interchangeable and it's all about getting the most processing capability. On a laptop, it means little to nothing and what's most important is your graphics card and chipset.
I think the Intel chips are supposed to be more power efficient, but I doubt it makes too much of a difference. I would side with which laptop fits your needs and what one looks better. To say intel or amd is better would be shortsighted. You're buying an unchangeable system so wysiwyg.

Core 2 duo is yet to be matched by any of AMD's processors. Intel is the way to go!
