John Edwards spoke about how prayer helped him get through the death of his son and his wife's cancer diagnoses. Barack Obama repeatedly invoked the biblical phrase "I am my brother's keeper" as he spoke about poverty and injustice. Hillary Rodham Clinton credited her faith with getting her through her husband's infidelities.

"Religious Left" is politically incorrect. It needs to be more like "Observant" Left, or "Seasonal" Left.

Kind of like the way the "Religious Left" has forced all the rest of us to keep our "Religious" words out of Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Hanukkah, and every other holiday we're forced to take a "moment of silence" in, instead of actually being allowed to publicly proclaim our religious beliefs! Or say "Season's Greetings" or "Happy Holiday" out in public, instead of what we actually celebrate at home and at church!

OH, HOW HYPOCRITICAL!!

Does the religious right have a monoply on God? When the right invokes religion it is only to impose their own views on everyone else. Edwards and Clinton used their faith to get through personal difficulties as any one else would in times of need. I really do not think that God cares about your political affiliation when you are praying for guidance and aren't we all (democrats and republicans) are brother's keeper?

For those of you unfamiliar with the religious left (actually a misnomer, because God is neither liberal or conservative), you may wish to check out:

- Jim Wallis, an evangelical Christian with Soujourners, who wrote 'God's Politics.'

- Rev Jim Forbes, senior pastor ot Riverside Church in New York (about to retire). Rev Bill Coffin (deceased), former senior minister of Riverside, also wrote several books.

- Marcus Borg (one of several progressive biblical scholars) is a very clear writer. One recent example is 'The Heart of Christianity.'

- Bishop John Spong has tried to popularize progessive Christianity, and has written many books.

I don't judge the behavior o the left in practicing their faith.

That being said, I am deeply offended by the way the Democratic leadership quickly runs into Black churches during election years, swaying to gospel music as if this was their normal behavior. Once they get the Black vote they quietly slip back to their all-White exclusive churches for the next few years. But nobody ever calls them on it.

Like with Oscar Romero? Out risking his life working for the human rights of the people of El Salvador? Then he got gunned down by right wing thugs working for a guy the Republicans supported.

...Or, perhaps they believe religion & politics should rarely mix, and so they are hesitant to bring their personal beliefs into the equation. Yes, it's true, they all pander to the religious phonies in the crowds but we all know which group takes THAT platform more often than not!

Certainly no worse than Republicans who only believe in God during election speeches and act in the most godless way possible.
