Is it possible the bladder just slowly leaked out its air and can be refilled with air, or does the tank need to be replaced?

check the schrader valve to make sure it doesn't leak air and then depress it to see if water comes out...if water does come out you will have to replace tank....if water does not come out...turn pump off, open your water hose faucet and make sure water will run out ....leave water hose in spray position...pump air in tank until all water is removed from tank.....once you are sure there is no water in tank ...turn faucet off and put three pounds less air than kick on pressure of your pump..if pump kicks on at 20 psi then you need 17 psi of air...if pump kicks on at 30 psi then you need 27 psi of air....the pressure switch cover will have operating pressure of your switch on inside of cover of on back of cover...once you have done this turn your pump back on and everything will be just fine as long as your tank is good.....I have seen these tanks need air just like you have to add air to tires occasionally

If it is a blatter type and has water on the out side of the bladder you could try to drain it out and refill it with air but a bladder tank is allot smaller than the old air charged tanks without the bladders and will make your well pump kick on allot more often so in the short run it will work, but it should be replaced before you burn out your pump from short cycling it.

what brand is it? some companies will sell you a replacement bladder. drop your water pressure and remove the tank from the water line. get a small compressor or a hand air pump(lots of pumping) and drain the tank by putting the water outlet downward and pumping air into the top where the air valve is. if you get any air from the tank then, yes, you have a bladder leak. the manufacturer will give you detailed instructions on how to replace the bladder. then just pressurize the tank and reinstall it.

I take it this is different than a hot water tank(which is always full of water). If this is for a well set up, you should be able to pump more air in(there should be a valve at the top that takes a bicycle pump.) I have well tanks that have no more than a piece of wood floating in there.

its possible the plummer is right.
the way to check is to use a tire gauge and check the pressure.
the tank has a schrader valve on it just like the valve stem on your cars tires.
the only place you could loose air pressure is if the bladder is leaking or the valve core in the schrader valve is leaking.
if the pressure is gone or less than twenty psi you would empty the tank of water and fill the tank with air to 5lbs more pressure than the pressure switch for the pump shutoff is set at.
if its a 40lb switch fill to 45psi.
put soapy water in the schrader valve opening and look for bubbles, if so the valve core is leaking try to tighten or replace, they are less than a dollar at auto parts store.
if the pressure leaks down and it's not the valve- replace tank

I just replaced mine last fall. Put the new one in myself and a new one isn't all that expensive either.
