Since they are 25 miles apart after one hour, and they are going in opposite directions, their speeds must add up to 25 miles per hour. Since Maria is 5mph faster than Suzy, it must be that Suzy is going at 10mph and Maria at 15mph.

Let x and x + 5 be the speed of Suzy and Maria respectively.

Since speed is in miles per hour, and they travel only an hour, the speed in mph becomes the distance in miles. Meaning that x and x + 5 essentially must be the distance travelled in an hour.

They are 25 miles apart. (Sum of the distances is 25)

x + (x + 5) = 25
2x + 5 = 25
2x = 20
x = 10

Suzy is going at 10 mph

B. 10 mph

x + (x + 5) = 25
Since they are in mph and you only have one hour, the h drops out and you only need to find miles.
2x + 5 = 25
2x = 20
x = 10
