I keep seeing child support and alimony (aka maintenance) confused. Most divorces are uncontested – few end up in litigation. Alimony is as rare as the white rhino:

"In the past, most alimony awards provided for payments to former wives by breadwinning former husbands. As the culture has changed, so that now most marriages include two wage earners, women are viewed as less dependent, and men are more likely to be primary parents, the courts and spousal support awards have kept pace. More and more, the tradition of men paying and women receiving spousal support is being eroded, and orders of alimony payments from ex-wife to ex-husband are on the rise."

Some posters don't read - comic books and Hustler don't count, R. Why all this kafuffel about a non-existent issue?

The evidence suggests:
1. Alimony is rare
2. That when there is alimony, it runs both ways
Why? Women's increasing economic power; women are less likely to be as poor (read; 'needy') - than in the past. Women's greater autonomy is a result of 'feminism'.

So much cranking about women taking men to the cleaners - and not a speck of evidence, LOL! It's exposed as a MYTH.

HAHAHA...I see that "C" is not happy at all being caught with his pants around his ankles. As another poster rightly pointed out: when pressed for evidence the cranks predictably can supply none. What to do? Sling insults instead: 'ad hominem'.

Child support and alimony is a joke! Most of the time, child support payments are not enough to buy a jar of peanut butter and a bar of soap. The fathers moan and cry over having to give $100.00 a month to their child, yet they will blow over a $100.00 at a sporting event or drinking beer with the boys. I think that it is ludicrous that a court order must be given for a father to help feed and shelter his own flesh and blood. Alimony is a myth, I've never known a woman who actually wanted anything from their ex but peace and sanity.

Alimony? Child support? I don't know anyone who has gotten alimony, and I've met quite a few people who never received a dime to bring up their children (both women and men).

When I divorced my husband, I paid for our house payment and my apartment until the house was sold (almost a year), since I made more money than my ex-husband. I would have been glad to pay him alimony, but he didn't want it. We also had a loan we'd gotten from his parents, that I paid back as well.

In the real world, alimony is a joke--who gets it other than movie stars? For many parents, so is child support. A lot of people are ordered to provide child support, but some pay, some don't.

One would presume that each case would be judged on it's individual merits. The co-respondents are, after all, the ones who best know Their own circumstances.
Correct Me if I am wrong but wasn't it until as late as 1836 - 8 that Women in Britain were first allowed to hold title to property in Their own right? This concept then reticulated throughout the majority of the World. Is someone trying to make the suggestion that Women should be financially disadvantaged as a result of the break down of a marriage? I would never agree to that. I'm giving the idea a big THUMBS DOWN ! !
I imagine that there are statistics available from both State and Federal Government instrumentalities..

Yes, we hear about it all the time how some greedy woman instigates divorce and takes everything a man owns out of bitterness.
Sure, there might be actual cases of this happening, but I want to see real-life cases/statistics before I make up my mind about this issue.
There seem to be a couple of emotional male members here that unable to provide a reasonable argument otherwise, have instead decided to sling insults instead.
To those I say, well men, us women are trying to see your side of the story, it works both ways don't you think?

As in every case of jurisprudence each case must be decided on precedence as how it pertains to each case. Now as to your question alimony is rewarded reguardless as to whether the union produced offspring or not. As a preface to your question yousaid you have sought child support. What am I supposed to think? If you are a single parent you are entitled to child support, or Ishould say the child or children are entitled.

God bless you for that. If I see one more man crying about how expensive raising his own children can be, or railing against alimony, I think I'll just about scream. 5-15% of divorces end up with an alimony order, (it varies widely by state) and generally for a short term, such as two years. I personally know TWO men who have recieved alimony. The man's household almost always has a higher standard of living than the wife's, since she usually has custody of the children. As bad as it is for men, it's almost always worse for the women. So for goodness sake, STOP WHINING.

Oh, and child support? Efforts to increase collection were an anti-welfare movement led by MEN!!!! So, Phil, Cassius, etc., would you like to bring back welfare? Because I'm not about to see children starving in the streets because you think it's unfair that a child's father would have to contribute.

it really is, at least around here (oregon) because of the "no fault" divorce that anti-feminists tend to fight against.
my mom was a traditional stay-at-home mom & housewife for 32 years, when my dad divorced her she was awarded only $200 a month (he makes at least $4000) and was told to go out & get a job (she's 50 & has never had a job before, i had to teach her how to do a resume, even down to the fact that it should be typed!)
when i got divorced, i had no job for a few months, but i took no support. i instigated the divorce, filed for it, payed for it, and i only insisted that he pay me $500/month for a few months to pay for the[my] car that he took (that i bought prior to marriage).

yeah, Robinson, i suppose men would not thank feminists for making it so that women are no longer property, can OWN things (including property), and can legally say "no" to having sex with their husbands, can inherit marital assets in the event of the death of a husband or father, can get custody of children, hold a job with equal pay, earn money & keep it, and vote

You're so right. This is one of several WS troll myths that is so easily debunked yet people still want to perpetuate it. I honestly don't know what they get out of it. Maybe they want to identify with the rich and famous and when they hear one of those odd alimony cases and the media spin they fear it could happen to them. Them being working class most likely and couldn't afford it they develop an irrational fear. Sort of like their fear of thinking women.

You are so right. These men who blame others for their misfortunes never have to look at how they contribute to the problem. Men that don't feel they should support their children should invest in a vasectomy. If you don't want children then start shooting blanks. You have raised a very valid point and the fact that you have received so much blatant hostility from some of the misogynists proves that you have hit home with the facts. They can't stand being wrong.

And im happy to get it from him and use it for them.Just because your not allowed to see your kids doesn't mean you shouldn't help take care of them. they are still your financial responsibility.
