Tom Wolfe, Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, Hunter Thompson ... if you can get through those four and still have your mind, ask for more names. Pax - C

A lot depends on what you mean by the label. For instance, Kurt Vonnegut wasn't a hippie by any reasonable definition, but he was tremendously popular among hippies. Kerouac was a beat writer, sort of a '50s precursor to hippies, and also very popular.

Ken Kesey, best known for his classic "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", would be on a short list of hippie writers. Tom Robbins is a pretty well-known hippie writer. Personally I like his first book, "Another Roadside Attraction" better than some later books which are better known. Another famous and fascinating writer, who was probably writing fiction although he claimed otherwise, was Carlos Casteneda in his Don Juan books.

Another remarkable writer who was heavily influenced by psychedelics (and personally consumed heroic amounts) was the science fiction writer Philip K Dick. Dick is best known for the huge number of movies, including "Total Recall" and "Blade Runner" made from his work. I would recommend trying "Ubik", "Time Out of Joint", or "A Scanner Darkly".

Richard Brautigan, esp. In Watermelon Sugar and Trout Fishing in America although, like many of the authors already mentioned, he's a little old to be a hippie. On the psychadelic tip, you also might want to check out Vurt by Jeff Noonan.

Along with those already listed, you might also be interested in Abbie Hoffman's "Steal This Book," for a look at the hippie culture as it was happening.
