Some reasons that women don't get epidurals are:

1. Their labor is too far along or progressing too quickly when they ask for it
2. They cannot tolerate needles
3. They have had medical history of complications while under anesthesia
4. Allergic to certain local anesthetics or narcotics
5. Have a disease of the nervous system
6. Have an infection of the lower back area
7. Have had previous lower back surgery
8. Are morbidly obese (very overweight)
9. Cannot cooperate or get into the proper position.
10. The anesthesiologist is unavailable!

Congratulations!!

If you have any damage in your spine (old injuries, for example), the epidural might not work. For my second child, I went with the epidural (first one was natural) and I had what they referred to as a window - an area of my belly where it didn't work.

I felt every contraction, even though I got the drugs. Annoying. If we had a third child, I would skip the drugs. I did it for my huband more than me.

I just had a baby the 10th of April and I was very worried because my midwife said that my blood platelet count was low and if it did not go up I would not be able to get the epidural during labor. While I was in labor I had blood tests done and they said that they were still low and it was up to the anesthesiologist. He ended up saying that they were low but not to low so I could get it. If your count is to low your blood will not clot and you could bleed to death, so that's why they do the blood tests.

If you are taking certain types of meds, you are bleeding heavily, labor progresses too rapidly, you are allergic to anesthetics, or something is not right with your blood work than you would not be given an epidural. With 2nd child I was not allowed to have one because I walked into the hospital at 10cm dilated.

Some doctors will not give you an epidural if you have a tattoo in the spot that they need to insert in.

if you are already too far into labor the epidural will not "kick in" in time.
also if the anesthesiologist is busy you may not get one.

If labor progresses too quickly, you may not be able to get one on time.
