I am cleaning out my bookshelf and I have great books as well as textbooks I am looking to get rid of. I do not want to throw them away. I would like to make money off them, but at the very least give them to someone to use.

Where can I sell them? to any bookstores? or an organization? a store?

To can try to sell them to bookstores. You can also give the books to charity, or maybe the local library.

You have some great suggestions so far.

If your textbooks are fairly new, you might want to list them on eBay or Amazon. You need to check their value (use the ISBN). I often use Amazon.com to check prices. Go to their link Sell Your Stuff and from there you can type in the ISBN. It will show you what copies are going for and then you can decide if it's worth your time. If you sell to someone on-line, remember you still need to package it and mail it (and use media mail unless someone has ordered expedited shipping or it is very light and can go first class.)

I bumped into someone at the post office that seemed very excited about what she got for her textbooks through eBay, so once you know what they're worth, you might want to list them there. Weigh your options. Heck, weigh your books. Textbooks are usually pretty hefty. Selling them back to the campus bookstore isn't the best way to make any dollars off of them, however. You might be able to post flyers with your number on them around campus and sell them that way, too.

I see some suggestions about places to donate, and that sounds good, too. I know half price books doesn't pay too well anymore - I've never tried to sell there - I'd rather give them away.

You can use Amazon, too, to check out prices for your other books and then you decide. If you list on Amazon, there are no initial costs, but once a book sells you pay a pretty good amount of money to them (For someone selling a book for 1 cent and getting $3.99 for shipping, Amazon keeps $1.50 and if you are NOT a pro merchant, they keep another 99 cents. Doesn't leave room for profit on cheap books.) Half.com doesn't have any up front costs, either (I don't think) and it's similar to Amazon except it allows buyers to have combined shipping.

eBay means paying to list, and if you don't get any bids or a Buy It Now, you don't get any money back. You set your own postage/handling however and can offer combined shipping, which I like.

So, lots of options. It just depends on how much work you want to do. I'd start with the textbooks to see if they are worth anything. Good luck!

P.S. Some stores will give you credit for books traded in, so if you're looking for different books to fill your shelves, you could go that way.

Depends on what books you have. If your textbooks are current editions, try taking them back to your college bookstore. They often buy back textbooks at a discount. If they are old editions, sorry to say they aren't worth anything. About all you can do is throw them out. Try donating the rest to the public library. Many of them have annual used book sales, and they use the proceeds from the sale to buy new books they need. They may incorporate your books into their collection if they happen to be titles they can use.

Try a used book store if you want to trade them for other books. Ebay would be best for selling the books. If you just want to get rid of them, try donating them to a library if they are in good condition.

Garage sales will be the easiest way to try and sell them, but don't expect much.

I tried selling books at half price books. They did not offer me as much money as I thought I would get, so I decided to keep them. I figured that it was better to donate to the church's rummage sale then to keep the money. If you want to make money off of it, you should try the internet or a garage sale or place an ad in the paper.

You can sell them at half.com. However a nice idea is to give some to www.booksforsoldiers.com. Our guys and girls overseas love getting books and they pass them on to others. A few books can make a lot of people smile. Pax - C
