About a 2 years ago, I bought a Sears Kenmore Progressive. I love it! It has all the features similar to an Electrolux, but was cheaper. I also bought it from the Sears parts/service store. When purchasing from there, they can be either refurbished, or just be the sales models that do not have a box, but they did give me a 2 year warranty where if anything happened in 2 years I could return it. My last vacuum was bought at Sears also as a floor model with no box and I used it for many years also. It was a Hoover Breathe Easy. I would definitely try Sears. We bought that one at the mall. It was our first purchase as a couple. we looked kind of silly pushing a vacuum through the mall to go back to our car, but hey, we got it for half the retail price and used it for 4 years. It still works, but has lost some suction.

I was going to buy a Dyson, but for Christmas I got a Hoover Savvy as a gift and I love it.... It retails for about $200. It has furniture/curtain attachment and it's purple ! It's bagless, it has a canister that I empty outside. I have 2 kids, husband and a dog which sheds a lot.... I've permanetly broken every other vacuum except this one.... The downside.. It's a little heavy, I've had it repaired twice..I bought the extended service plan ($100) for three extra years..I cheated on the Warranty card and put my birthday instead of Christmas so I got an additional year of service...
The filter costs about $40 I replace mine every other year... Depending on where you live, finding a Hoover repair shop... I got lucky there's one about 10 min. away... Good luck

I'm a Vac Tech. There are not a lot of choices. Buy one with a bag. It will be cheaper on maitainace, and hold up longer. The two best buys under $70.00 are the Bissell 3522 Power Force and Hoover U5140-900 Tempo. They are both well worth the money. If you can find them. If not that, go to an independent dealer and ask them what they have in your price range. If they are anything like my store they try to have the best vacs in each price range. (If they sell you junk you can take it back and chew them out. You can't do that at a big box store, so independents will try to get you the best buy)

For under $200 you won't get a lot. I like my Dyson better than any other vacuum I have owned. It cost about 400 and is definitely better than the much more expensive ones. So if you can save up for a Dyson, it's worth it! (P.S. I got mine at Best Buy. They were offering a 12 month no interest special, so I paid it off in just a few months).

One of the best is a Hoover Preferred Widepath. It is an upright BAGGED unit. VERY powerful with a nice wide brush roll. HEPA rated and sells brand new for about $110.

Got this a couple of months ago as per the CR recommendation. It works good on carpet, not so good on hard floors. For hard floors, the brush does not turn off and shoots the bigger junk around. But it works good on carpet, is pretty light, LOTS of power, a bag change indicator, and the attachments work well. Going to get another now! Make sure to get extra bags soon, they go fast.
Its cheap and has great amazon reviews!

Well I like the Oreck and you can finance it. They have stores around and you can get it serviced and it lasts for years. I have had mine for about 5-6 years now and its still great.
