LOL. Although that is an old wives tale, I'll be darned if my first child wasnt a hairy little fellow and I had HORRIBLE heartburn.

This is what I did. I didnt want to take any OTC meds or RX but my OB had said I could take TUms and I did on occassion but I hated the way they tasted. (hey I also couldnt stomach chicken breast--go figure.)

I learned to fall asleep sitting up! I propped one of those bed pillows upside down (so the incline for me was more comfortable) and leaned against it to fall asleep. By the time I'd awake to pee in the middle of the night my heartburn would be gone and I could go to sleep normal.

I also learned to avoid red sauces but if I had to I'd drink milk with the meal to help counteract the acid. And it seemed I could eat bland chicken rice and corn and get heartburn so I ate what i wanted!! LOL!

I chewed papaya enzyme and acidopholous (sorta helped.)
And I drank plenty of water and tried not to eat before bed (I say try to eat 3-4 hours before bed so your food can settle some.) And eat light and a little. remember your stomach is the WAY smaller in the end of preg than when ur not preg! It aint got much room!! :)

Best of luck and congrats!!

Tums, Tums, Tums, Tums, and more Tums. Did I mention Tums?

I burned through big family sized containers of those chewable tabs week after week. Sure, avoid spicy food, but at some point it may get so frequent that everything you eat causes the heartburn. A full-term baby puts so much pressure on a mother's stomach that it turns the stomach into a pancake. No wonder we get heartburn - there's no room for the food and stomach acid anymore!

I think at some point during my pregnancy I just gave up trying, and started munching on anything I wanted, including jalepeno kettle chips. My thought was, if nothing I do will relieve it, I might as well cheer myself with food I enjoy! And hey, it didn't make the heartburn worse, either.

Being upright helps as well. If you have difficulty sleeping because of heartburn, try sleeping propped upright against lots of pillows. Man, I'd forgotten about all the pillows I used...pregnant women love them some pillows! :) Or, if you have a comfy couch or recliner, you can try sleeping on that.

If burping helps, sipping some ginger ale may give you some relief. By the way, try Tums:) Hey, at least you know you'll be getting your calcium needs met!

Oh, and rest assured, the moment your baby is on the outside, your heartburn will go away:) I remember being brought a tray of food an hour after delivery, and man, hospital food never tasted so good! :)

i had the worst heartburn ever when i was pregnant. i quite eating anything containing tomatoes and cucumbers and anything spicy. it didn't help. i ate lots of Rolaids and it helped for a little while. i was going through two bottles a week and my midwife assured me it was OK. everyone told me the baby would have lots of hair because of the heartburn. i thought it was an old wives tale until he was born. he had more hair than i have ever seen on an infant. i could have put it in a ponytail the day he was born. so, i guess there must be some truth to it. he is three and still has tons of hair. good luck and sorry about the heartburn.

So not true! It is definitely an old wives tale. I had the WORST heartburn with my son (throughout my whole pregnancy starting in the first trimester), so bad so that I often threw up bile in my mouth while I was sleeping and no medicine would remedy my horrible symptoms. I thought too that he would had a head full of hair and boy was I surprised when he was finally born- blond and practically bald! :) Have a happy pregnancy and know that it will all be worth it all in the end, bald baby or not. Heartburn is so worth the trouble to be able to hold that beautiful baby in your arms at the end. Take care!

Try to stay away from foods that give you heart burn and eat lots of tums, I have to disagree with what most people do say though. I had awful heartburn when I was pregnant and my daughter barely had any hair. So I dont think that is true.

I had really bad heartburn when I was pregnant, mostly from all the spicy chicken sandwiches from Wendy's, lol. What really worked good was this antacid gum I found at Wal-Mart. As soon as you start chewing it you start to feel better. If you were like me, everything you eat gives you heartburn so I suggest the gum. (Sorry, I can't remember the name of it.)

And BTW, my son didn't have a full head of hair. Only a little bit. Guess that story isn't always true lol.

I hated my heartburn... don't worry it goes away once you have the cutie. I also hate the taste of Tums, I think its real chaukie. I used the cherry Rolaids, they're chewy (soft chews is what they are called) and taste like candy... in fact when I wanted something sweet I'd eat one of those. My daughter had lots of hair but it was only on her head so don't worry about having a monkey... even though they are cute too!!

This happens because the uterus is starting to take more room, which pushes into the digestive areas and forces gas and stomach acid upward. I believe Tums are safe but you should never try to medicate yourself while pregnant until you speak to your doctor. I'm thinking if you call your ob/gyn, you can get advice for heartburn and indigestion over the phone.

1. Stay upright an hour after eating
2. Eat smaller meals
3. Don't wear tight or restrictive clothing
4. Avoid spicy and greasy foods

If all else fails, have a spoonful of Maalox.

Get some Tums. I had very little heartburn and had my son with a full set of black hair. Although one of my friends had heart burn very bad and her daughter had TONS and TONS of thick, dark hair so it varies, but most likely you will have a baby with a full head of hair. Congrats in advance.
