After reading the answer of "Mr. Yesterday" at http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvfdyCRYT5kx0SZ.n8fGCADAFQx.?qid=20070606120758AATFg3V I have decided to share the pictures of suspicious DVD's that I bought at eBay. Please see the pictures at http://www.box.net/shared/mxjaqh5y0z and help identify the real suspicious/illegal DVD's so that I can file complaints against their sellers at eBay and prevent others from becoming the victims of fraud.

(left to right)
First DVD was bought at Zellers and second was bought at Future Shop. I am giving these two pictures for comparison. All other DVD's were bought at eBay. Last two pictures are of same DVD. My suspicions began when I received The Godfather. As I remember from a borrowed copy of this movie, the DVD was supposed to have picture on it. Secondly the cover had only one seal on the top of the cover had rather simplistic writing on it. Thirdly, the cover was very soft and flexible.

The "Bicentenial Man" DVD looks legit. I remember that is how they first came out looking when we bought the DVDs for our stores.

I can't remember what the other films looked like when they first came out, but I know that the newer "Saving Private Ryan" 2 DVD collector's set looks different from the one you pictured.

As far as the boxes go, they tend to break, especially the tabs that hold the disc in place. It is not uncommon for substandard substitute boxes to be used when the original breaks. The seller on ebay might have bought a $3 DVD just for the case to send to you. If the cases smell funny, there is a 50-50 chance that it was taken from a cheap DVD for shipping purposes. If not, then it was probably a bootleg copy from the start.

The real test is to play the DVDs. You have them open, you might as well use them. If the disc have obvious defects, or poor copies of the movies, return them demand a refund. If the box art, or media transfer are bad, you might want to tip the FBI or other national law enforcement types.

I'm sorry I can't really judge a pirated DVD from the original only from the pictures of the disc or cover. You will be surprised at how sophisticated pirated DVD looks nowadays. They even have Special/Box Edition on some movies with indistingushable disc & cover printings. That's why M'sian police use special dogs trained to track down pirated DVDs because you really can't judge DVD by the cover (disc)... :-p

Look at the back(reflective side) of the dvd If it is purple or dark purple/blue then it is a copy. Real dvds are silver and sometimes gold
