There were a lot of other Cold War events in that period. The most obvious is the war in Vietnam, but there were also proxy wars very much influenced by the Cold War in Angola, the Middle East (the 1973 war in particular), Yemen, Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, and Central America. Another very important event was the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, as well as the Sino-Soviet split of the late 1960s,

The other thing that happened gradually over this period was that the Western democracies completely surpassed the Warsaw Pact nations in economic productivity. It wasn't obvious before the Cold War that this would happen; some people felt that the economic weakness of the USSR was a result of the backwardness of Czarist Russia or the devastation of the country in WWII, and the Soviet economy would soon catch and surpass those of the West. By 1989, it was abundantly clear that the Soviet system was an economic failure, that the gap in living standards was widening rather than closing, and that this would continue while the Warsaw pact countries retained the Leninist system.
