Being a Hindu, i will explain about the lord Sani...Shaneeswaran was called as sani is one of the hindu god of Saturn. He was know as one of the biggest trouble maker to the people he saw as well as gives wealth when time comes. He is also called as chayyaputra which means son of chayya (shadow) born for god Surya (sun) and Chayya Devi. I am from south India (Tamil nadu) and there is a temple called thirunellaru for lord sani. People visit this temple when ever there is Sani (saturn) transit.... and coming to your second part of your question.. i guess that's because of the proper usage of resources and importantly population. Most of the western countries has 500-600 years of history not like India which as more than 5000 years.

Shani God, is powerful: he is actually a friendly god! He does a lot of good to people who have him on the right side (good position, wellplaced in the chart!)! He is the slowest moving planet: hence the name, Shaneeswara! (shanaischaratheethi, shanaischaraha; in sanskrit derivation!) There is a legend that he was given the title: "Easwara" by Lord Shiv, hence Shaneeswara, unlike other planets! (In Thirunalaru, near Karaikal, he is given the status of VIP God, in the Lord Shiva temple premises!) In mythology, he is also 'ravi puthra'(son of Sun!) or, Chhaya-Marthanda Sambhootha, and 'yamaagraja' (elder brother of Lord Yama!)!
#2. Western countries are better developed, in comparison, firstly because they were not plundered and exploited by alien people, and secondly because, they historically commenced the phase of developing much earlier than countries like India, whose 'developing times' commenced just the other day, in comparison! Population, in numbers and also in homogeneity, is also a factor, in this regard!

Saturn cannot be dealt with briefly.

Are western countries developed?
Well yes I suppose, if you call the ability to wage deadly war and steal other nations' natural resources development.
Seems the world needs LESS development, more caring.
