sorry to say, he's mandated by law to do upkeep on the property especially if it needs a new roof, you should be grateful that he cares enough about the property you're renting to reinvest money into it many land lords will only do that now if you sue them.

Your landlord is making dramatic improvements to the house you live in, at no expense to you, and you will be the immediate beneficiary of those improvements.
If your only cost for the improvements is living with normal construction inconveniences, and then you will get to live in a nicer and better house... HELLO... asking for a discount is a great way to show your appreciation.
If he is not raising your rent, you should think about "biting the hand..."

You should be happy he is doing the repairs and improving the place you live at and its only going to take 10 days!
I would not dare ask for a rent discount, unless he was storing matterials inside the house in the main living area!
