why do light bulbs randomly make a popping noise

In most homes, there is a slight surge when you first turn on a light switch, to the circuit. Quite often, this results in a bulb "popping" or burning out. Might be a good idea to check your circuit breakers... a typical light circuit, for example, should be on a 15 amp circuit.
There is a little gadget you can buy, which slips in under the light bulb... it looks a bit like the top of an old fashioned fuse, without the screw in portion, about a quarter inch thick.
This little gadget fits between the socket and the bulb, and actually prevents a surge to the bulb, and extends the life of the bulbs a great deal. You can often find them at 'farm supply' stores.
Just for kicks... you can also get one that, when it heats up, causes the light to blink on and off, lol.

uh... they dont... do you mean like when you turn them on or off. perhaps it could be the fixture expanding as it heats. if your lights are poping at you, you may have an electrical problem. or you may need to pee in a little cup.
