If I were you, I would choose a topic that is relatively unknown in the general public, but has a lot of research available. One such topic would be "Cause Related Marketing - Beneficial or Harmful?" If you do a google or Yahoo! search, you will find a ton of articles on CRM, but it is a relatively new business venture, first defined in the mid 80's by American Express. Here is a good overview article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cause_marketing
Basically it is a for profit organization partnering with a nonprofit organization with mutual goals of benefiting both the company and the cause. It is replacing traditional philanthropy in many businesses, and is often administered by a company's marketing/communications department rather than community relations or employee giving.

Fairly simple topic to grasp, conflicting viewpoints are present, and I can't imagine that anyone else in your course will select anything close to this topic.
Wishing you success!

some brainstorming ideas for your project:
#1 Litigation cost. Findlaw.com, Search McDonalds lawsuits (plus other fast food places), British tried to do "Fat Tax" taxes on fast food. Reasons on why it didn't work in U.S ( Very powerful lobby of fast food chains)
#2 Consumer Preference, choice when new research got popularized by media, consumers greatly shifter their prefernces analyze the consequences, Margine became very unpopular (high transfat), butter came on top. (Not too long ago 'can't believe its not butter commercial' - today would be a joke. How mac donalds changed the oil it uses for french fries because of lack of transfar fad.

Why not write a paper about how marketing affects buyer's preferences? what I mean is ...consider how news or annual reports affect consumer preferences.
Think about the marketing efforts of lets say Taco Bell or KFC given they are owned by Pepsi (with significant resources)...versus the negative publicity generated by certain foods provided at other places (high carbohydrate or high fat foods). Think about Subway's latest efforts to market healthy choices. Or perhaps Mc Donald's catering to the hispanic customer with their Latin flavor salads....
I hope that helps. There are lots of articles available...you can google it or you can search at the library by entering key words like marketing, restaurants, healthy, nutrition and the like...
good luck.

How about the impact of Toys and childhood obesity in relation to fast food restaurants.
or
The economic differences of Asian and American buffets in regards to profit and alcohol consumption.
or
Major events of crime in regards to stealing of company trade secrets. You could focus on the folks who tried to steal Coke's secrets and the rumors of armed guards preventing folks from stealing the 11 herbs and spices in Original KFC chicken. And you could see if those rumors are true or produced to make the food even better by a air of mystery.
Maybe these might help more. If you have questions about where I was going with anything. Please feel free to ask.
