Why would you want to be 'controlled' by anyone or anything? If you feel you need to be 'controlled' you are in fact saying that you do not have the mentality to control yourself. Since not all religions believe in a 'holy spirit' how can you say that it 'unites' everyone? Christianity is, in fact, a very dividing belief system, not just within itself but can separate families also. Since you are no doubt asking about Christianity I suggest you read Matthew 10: 34 -36. In case you don't have a bible the scriptures read this way (it is Jesus speaking here),
34. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword,
35. For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
36. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household
Religious individuals will say that yes there is a division made when one member turns to god and the rest don't. But this is more to be seen in Christianity than in any other religion. There is an old saying that states that you should be very careful what you ask for, you might just get it. If you are looking for 'unity' then the very last thing you want is any kind of religion. Your desire for 'unity' tells me that you are a gentle hearted person. Use your intelligence and strive for unity without causing a lot of upset and asking to be 'controlled'. There is lots of room on this planet for people who want unity and peace, it is already full of religions. Read the url at (http://ca.geocities.com/rachelpowerslane) that deals on unity and tolerance. This pIanet needs a whole lot more people like you, but not ones that are 'controlled'. Seek enlightenment and wisdom instead. If you are very religious you are already controlled.

You should read the writings about st Seraphim of sarov. Especially his discussions with Motovilov.
In brief all strictures such as prayer, fasting, ritual, celibacy, flagellation can help you achieve this contact. The key is purifying yourself by following some or all of the strictures depending on what is a good purification technique for you.
Purification is NOT a process of self-denial! It is rather a process by which we allow our impure or sinful tendencies be overshadowed/overpowered by our desire for salvation and our desire to follow the instructions of the Creator as given by inspirion by the holy spirit. Strictures help us manifest this desire and to improve and test it.
So stage one is deciding the Creator is more important to us than all our own desires and attachments. Stage two is following the inspiration of the Holy Spirit which will guide us on the path of salvation and use us as instruments.
Be careful though that you are indeed communing with the Holy Spirit, other spirits may try to fool you into believing they are the Holy Spirit and provide false instructions. One good way to test a spirit is to ask it to recite a prayer showing their submission to the Creator, angels and spirits serving the Creator will do this without hesitation and in correct wording.

You won't become more "controlled" by the Holy Spirit. You can however succomb to God's wishes for you and lead a better life.

Jon,
1st...PEACE and LOVE be with you. 2nd, I am intrigued that you asked this question in Myth and Lore. And 3rd,If you trust in your own heart and learn to keep EGO out of what you feel in your heart, and, you will be controlled by the HOLY SPIRIT. Also know that you have connection to "GOD" that you have yet to understand . P.S.Controlled is not the best word to use. Guided, seems more appropriate.

Practice For--Giveness and it opens to this perspective of everything we have "fear" about is instantly given to Holy Spirit ---- It isn't about right or wrong its just for giving or surrendering things to a higher power that knows the TRUTH.
